Phoneticinformation, the smallest sound units of speech, is typically represented by alphabetic sounds.Previous studies have led linguists to believe infants pick up small sound elements first, andthen add them together to make words. To put this theory to the test once again, the Cambridgeresearchers recorded the brain activity of 50 infants at ages: four, seven, and 1l months old, as theywatched a video of an elementary school teacher singing 18 nursery rhymes.year of life, beginning with dental sounds (produced by the upper front teeth)—such as “d" for"daddy"; —and nasal sounds (produced when airflow is directed through the nose)—such as “m" fors an s sm ro ud n n h n s, ,as in ‘daddy’ or ‘mommy', with the stress on the first syllable,” explained Professor UshaGoswami, author of the study. “They can use this rhythm pattern to guess where one word ends andanother begins when listening to natural speech. "When processing their findings in relation to levels of development, the team explained that theresults suggest developmental language disorders may be associated with rhythm perception (感知能力), as opposed to difficulties with processing phonetic information."Our research shows that the individual sounds of speech aren't processed reliably until aroundseven months. From then individual speech sounds are still added in too slowly to form the basis oflanguage. We believe speech rhythm information is the hidden glue underpinning the development ofas much as possible or use infant-directed speech like nursery rhymes. "23125·G3DY(新高考)·英语-R-必考-N
